DAI LOY GAMBLING HALL
IN CHINESE, DAI LOY MEANS
“BIG WELCOME”

OPENED IN 1916 BY BING LEE, THIS GAMBLING HALL OPERATED UNTIL SACRAMENTO COUNTY OFFICIALS FORCED ITS DOORS TO CLOSE BY 1951,

AN OUTSIDE BENCH WAS SEATING FOR A LOOKOUT WHO COULD PUSH A SECRET BUTTON HIDDEN BELOW TO ALERT DEALERS INSIDE OF ANY APPROACHING POLICE RAIDS.

GAMES WERE PLAYED WITH COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS LIKE BUTTONS AND TEACUPS SO CUSTOMERS WOULD NOT BE ACCUSED OF GAMBLING.

PAI GOW, FAN TAN, HIGH-LOW AND CHINESE LOTTERY WERE THE GAMES OF CHANCE POPULAR HERE. CHINESE LOTTERY WOULD BE LATER BE ADOPTED BY CASINOS AS THE GAME KENO.

THE RYDE HOTEL

THE RYDE HOTEL

THE FIRST RYDE HOTEL AND SALOON WAS BUILT
IN 1886 BY THE FOUR GIUSTI BROTHERS FROM LUCCA, ITALY.
IN 1911, A KITCHEN FIRE DESTROYED THE HOTEL AND MOST OF TOWN.
THE HOTEL WAS REBUILT WITH A SPEAKEASY, WHICH WAS RAIDED TWICE
IN 1923. THE AUTHORITIES POSTED A MISSPELLED CLOSURE SIGN FOR
ITS ILLEAGAL OPERATION DURING “PROHOBITION”.
IN 1927, OWNER MRS. SEVERINA GIANETTE WOULD RECONSRUCT THE
HOTEL WITH AN ART DECO STYLE. THE HOTEL OFFERED 50 ROOMS, A
BARBER SHOP, BEAUTY SALON AND A DOCK FOR GUESTS TRAVELING THE
SCENIC SACRAMENTO RIVER.

THE BASEMENT HOUSED THE SPEAKEASY WITH ILLICIT LIQUOR,
GAMBLING, DANCING GIRLS, AND CABARET JAZZ. A 150 FOOT SECRET
TUNNEL WAS DUG TO MOVE BOOTLEG LIQUOR FROM OUTBUILDINGS,
WHICH INCLUDED A DISTILLERY AND BORDELLO. ACCORDING TO MANY,
IT WAS THE PERFECT HIDEOUT FOR “HOLLYWOOD TYPES”.
THE ORIGINAL PEEPHOLE FOR THE SPEAKEASY DOOR CAN
STILL BE SEEN IN THE LOBBY TODAY.
